Private Photo Tours

Offered throughout the Canadian Rockies

Efficient Itineraries - Adapted to you

These private photo tours offered in Banff, Lake Louise & further afield in the Canadian Rockies are designed for you (or you & your group) and are focused on photogenic & accessible areas, maximizing your time. We will visit diverse locations, focus on different subjects & use a variety of techniques to assist you in capturing your view of this jaw dropping landscape.

We offer these tours & others throughout the mountain parks – Banff, Lake Louise, Jasper, Yoho, Kootenay, Canmore/Kananaskis, the Icefields Parkway, Abraham Lake & more. They are suitable for anybody from complete beginners to advanced photographers and there are no physical requirements. We cater completely to you and your interests while using our local knowledge to deviate from the norm when it has the chance to elevate your experience or photos.

Options include sunrise, sunset, sunset-to stars, night, or full day photo tours with more options to extend these sessions, add post processing time, make it into a multi-day trip or to add in hikes to backcountry locations. See more on each of these options & reserve a private photo tour below.

Professionally Guided - Year Round

We are certified with two professional guiding associations in Canada, the IGA and the ACMG. This means we've thought through every step of a tour, carry emergency response devices & are trained in both Wilderness & Standard First Aid.

A Personalized Experience

No two tours are exactly alike and something interesting or out of the box almost always happens. Sometimes it's the wildlife encounters that are possible but mostly it is the ever changing weather & seasonality of the Canadian Rockies that never fails to surprise & captivate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Some common questions relating to our private photo tours are answered below.

Logistics

We will meet at your hotel or place of accommodation at a pre-determined time specific to the tour. For example, this is 1 hour before sunrise for a sunrise photo tour. Sometimes we will meet at our first location and convoy from there. The meeting point and time will be organized after booking.

Yes, a non-photographer spouse, friend or family member may join at no extra cost. If they will also be participating with their camera(s) beyond a phone camera then there is a multi-person booking discount available which is $195 + GST for each additional participant. Add any additional discounted participants to your booking on the checkout page where an option exists to select the reduced rate.

All! We enjoy taking out complete beginners and teaching them all about their equipment and nature photography just the same as if we have a more experienced photographer who prefers more location guiding, safety considerations & logistics than photo instruction.

Yes! Just let us know as far in advance as possible if you want to include Moraine Lake on one of our private photo tours. We will need to make additional transportation arrangements and spots on the bus fill up quite far ahead of time. We only visit Moraine Lake on a 5.5hr Sunrise+ photo tour or during a full day photo tour. There will be an additional fee to cover the transportation.

On Tour

Some examples of what you might learn about while enjoying the Rocky Mountain scenery:

– Working in manual mode and fully understanding the exposure triangle, Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO

– How to use filters to best effect – why and when to use them.

– Compositional techniques that you can use to create balance, tension and flow in your images.

– How to handle high dynamic range scenes, and preventing flare.

– The qualities of natural light, how it affects colour, and what to look for.

– Working on the tripod as well as off it, and when and how best to do so in both scenarios.

– Understanding depth of field and how to maximize it.

– Better understanding of your own camera gear and recommendations for making it more user friendly for the type of shooting you do.

– Getting creative, having fun and so much more!

Absolutely! You can let us know what works best for you. Often we simply adjust to you without you even knowing. Sometimes it’s just our local knowledge about what we’re seeing in the landscape that is all that’s needed while we keep you on track with an engaging itinerary and occasional tips or ideas for your photos.

We recommend bringing snacks and water on every tour. If the tour is longer we will make time at an appropriate point in the day to fuel up at a local restaurant, bakery or coffee shop.

Contact us for recommendations, especially if you are new to the area. Check the weather and bring more layers than you think you might need. In winter this is even more crucial.  Being comfortable so that you can enjoy the experience is paramount.

Policies

Yes, we will bring it for you to sign when we meet on the day of the photo tour. A copy will be provided in advance for viewing.

There are no refunds, however we do consider requests on a case by case basis. See our terms & conditions.

Weather

Our private photo tours will go ahead regardless of weather conditions. The Canadian Rockies look interesting in all types of weather and some of the most breathtaking and unique photos come from the worst conditions, such as during a clearing storm! Bring weather appropriate clothing. Having said this in extreme cases we will try to accommodate a change of time or day if availability allows.

Accurately gauging weather is a full time job and luckily we are slightly weather nutty as we view it as a key to great landscape photography. Check out the current weather for Banff below for fun. If you are keeping an eye on it, always use a variety of sources. The localized weather varies greatly in the mountains and our private photo tours always take this into consideration when planning for our time together.
