Small group photography workshops offered in the Canadian Rockies and other spectacular locations around Canada offered by Canadian landscape photographer Nick Fitzhardinge. These photography workshops are designed to be fun, engaging, and focused on learning while photographing jaw dropping landscapes.
2024/25 – Canadian Photography Workshops
October 5-8, 2024 & March 21st-24th, 2025 Yellowknife Aurora Chasing Tours (NWT)
Visit Yellowknife and the far North of Canada to photograph the Northern Lights during winter of fall during the darkest nights of each of these months! Winter wonderland or reflections, take your pick!
Event cost: $1075 + GST
- October 5th – 8th, 2024 We will meet at 2pm on the 5th and wrap up very late on the 7th (possibly up to 2am on the 8th) making for 3 nights of aurora chasing!
- March 21st-24th, 2025We will meet at 2pm on the 21st and wrap up in the morning on the 24th making for 3 nights of aurora chasing!
What is included?
Aurora Photography and peak fall colours (or a snowy winter wonderland if joining in March) in the Northwest Territories! Professional photography instruction & expert guidance from a certified guide and licensed NWT tourism operator. This event is timed to the darkest nights of September and March so we will have no additional light in the night sky making for enhanced aurora shooting conditions!
What is NOT included in the event?
* Accommodation – Contact me for recommendations. We will have a central meeting place close to everyone’s accommodation.
* Transport – Car pooling may be available so please get in touch if you are interested in that, but be prepared to organize your own rental car should that possibility not be available.
* Travel, medical & equipment insurance. I highly recommend you purchase these before embarking on this trip, especially to cover yourself in case you have to isolate due to covid 19 and will therefore not be able to participate. Refunds will not be issued for reasons due to Covid-19 (although a transfer to a future event may be an option) – having adequate coverage is essential.
* Food/drink
* Your flights and travel to Yellowknife, NWT.

Dusk to Dawn: Banff/Canmore Night Photography Adventures – May 4th & July 6th, 2024
Develop your night photography skills and capture unique angles of the Banff & Canmore areas on these all night weekend photo adventures!

Join a Canmore local for a full night photographing from dusk to dawn. Learn all about night photography and push your camera to it’s limits as we photograph on the some of the darkest nights on the selected dates! We will start before sunset to go over your gear and get settled before the night begins. Once it gets dark get ready to be in awe of how your camera sees Banff & Canmore by night and if we are lucky we will have opportunities to photograph the stars, the milky way & the aurora!
Mt Assiniboine Photo Adventures – June 28th-July 1st (3 nights) & September 25th-27th (2 nights)
Event Cost: $1475 – $1525 + GST
MT ASSINIBOINE PHOTO ADVENTURES (2 or 3 nights)
What to expect: Alpine lakes, wide open views, pristine wilderness, a beautiful trail system, wildflowers, wildlife, and if itβs clear, the opportunity to photograph the giant triangular apex of Mt Assiniboine. This trip is timed to the early spring in the mountains so there will be lots of unique photographic opportunities.
A moderate level of fitness is required. Walking distances of between 6 – 10km per day with elevation gains of approximately 300 metres per day to reach the different areas in the region. You will need to be able to carry your camera gear & any necessities with you over these distances. A small group size limited to 5 participants to keep our impact low and maximize your learning experience through my photography instruction & mentoring.
This is a hut based adventure staying in the Naiset Huts. Participants will need to bring a sleeping bag, along with food for the duration of our stay. It is a great way to unplug, get off the grid and connect with the outdoors!
I am a licensed guide in Mt Assiniboine Provincial Park with current first aid and advanced wilderness first aid certifications & have taken many prior trips into the Mt Assiniboine region. This workshop is suitable for all levels of photography experience as there will be many one on one opportunities throughout our time together. I will be by your side providing all that I know and love about landscape photography. This is a unique & potentially once in a lifetime experience β You will never forget photographing βThe Matterhorn of The Rockiesβ from the Nublet!

Rocky Mountain Heli Photography Adventure – August 3rd-5th, 2024

ROCKY MOUNTAIN HELI PHOTOGRAPHY ADVENTURE (2 nights at Michele Lakes, August 3rd-5th, 2024)
What to expect
Alpine lakes, wide open views, pristine wilderness, wildflowers, and if itβs clear, the opportunity to photograph the milky way & a billion stars with no light pollution whatsoever. There will be many unique photographic opportunities very close to our camp near the lakes on this trip.
This trip has a low physical requirement with not too much walking as we are dropped right by our campsite. There are no trails in the area however (which is one of its charms) so you should bring some hiking boots. A small group size limited to 6 participants to keep our impact low and maximize your learning experience through our photography instruction & mentoring. A minimum of 2 participants is required for this trip.
This is a camping based adventure staying at Michele Lakes where there are no facilities. A true wilderness experience! Participants will need to bring their own gear, along with food for the duration of our stay. Packing recommendations will be provided. It is a great way to unplug, get off the grid and connect with the outdoors! Participants are limited to 40lb of efficiently packed gear due to helicopter weight limitations.
We have gained authorization from the land managers of this area for this special trip, have current first aid and advanced wilderness first aid certifications & have taken prior trips into this region. This workshop is suitable for all levels of photography experience as there will be many one on one opportunities throughout our time together. We will be by your side providing all that we know and love about landscape photography.
Pricing includes the helicopter flight transportation to and from the area from the ‘Rockies Heli’ helipad at Abraham Lake, your random camping permits, 1v1 photography instruction throughout the trip, and a professional ACMG/IGA Hiking Guide.
Banff ‘Light, Lines & Layers’ Landscape Photography Workshop – November 29 – December 1st, 2024

Expertly photograph the dramatic transition to winter in Banff National Park by focusing on light, lines & layers on this guided landscape photography workshop!
Date: November 28 – December 1st, 2024 (3 nights/4 days)
What to expect
This 3 night Banff landscape photography workshop focuses on chasing dramatic light during one of the most photogenic times of year, the transition to winter. It is the perfect time to photograph as the crowds have died down, the landscape is covered with fresh snowfall & frost, and yet the lakes remain mostly unfrozen. The fragile, fleeting icy edges of these lakes and their accompanying rivers provide additional leading lines that we will take advantage of when searching for compositions at each location.
Our base will be in Lake Louise, in the heart of Banff National Park and each day we’ll venture to different locations in the surrounding area depending on the light and weather. During one sunset we will visit the top of the Banff Gondola (included in the event cost) for photographing mountain layers so come prepared with your telephoto lens! We will also venture to the top of the Lake Louise ski resort gondola for some shots as well.
By the end of the workshop you will have captured some amazing photographs, have learned new techniques or sharpened your skills, and made new friends in the Canadian Rockies.

Frozen ice bubbles & winter photography in Banff National Park at its best! Join us for some of the best possibilities for photographing cool ice formation on Abraham Lake. This 3 night winter landscape photography workshop focuses on capturing snowy winter wonderland scenery and amazing icy details that are the highlights of mid winter in Banff National Park. It really is the best time to visit the Canadian Rockies!
Our base will be in Lake Louise in the heart of Banff National Park and each day we’ll venture to different locations in the surrounding area depending on the light and weather. During one sunset session we will stay for blue hour among the ice sculptures and the ice castle that is on the frozen solid surface of Lake Louise!
By the end of the workshop you will have captured some amazing photographs, have learnt new techniques or sharpened your skills, and made new friends in the Canadian Rockies.
Itinerary
Meet at 2pm on the first day in Lake Louise, and finish at 11am on the final day. 3 nights and 3 days of jam packed locations, learning & fun! The exact itinerary will be light and weather dependant, we will stay flexible on this workshop. Our central base in Lake Louise will allow us to move in multiple directions efficiently with Abraham Lake, the Icefields Parkway, Emerald Lake, the Three Sisters, Castle Mountain & the Banff area being some of our location highlights.

2024 Winter in Banff: Chasing the ‘Milky Way’ Arch – Feb 17-19

A one of a kind Banff winter photo workshop experience! – during this 2 night (long weekend) photography workshop you will photograph classic Canadian Rockies winter scenery by day, along with the rare opportunity to capture the February milky way arch by night just after the moon has set, and right before dawn!
Our base in Banff will allow us a central location from which to reach a range of iconic shooting locations that you can put your own twist on with the help of your guide, Nick Fitzhardinge. There will be lots of time to learn about technical settings, light, astrophotography, composition, all in a small group setting with many 1v1 opportunities.
Add in a canyon walk on the second day and you will have lots of chances to capture unique images of the Canadian Rockies & improve your photography on this multi-day winter photo workshop!
